Why do my exhaust studs not bolt?

Are all exhaust studs the same?

Registered. The studs and nuts are NOT the same, but they are the SAME thread size and pitch.

How tight should exhaust manifold studs be?

Every vehicle has different levels of torque necessary to properly tighten its bolts. The standard is to use 20 to 30 foot-pounds of torque.

Can you replace exhaust manifold studs with bolts?

Super Moderator. I agree, the bolts in place of studs and nuts would be okay. Be sure to observe the torque specs for the bolts, i.e. to be the same as the nuts on the studs. You dont want an exhaust manifold to be too tight – it interferes with the manifold expanding at a different rate than the head.

Should I Retorque exhaust manifold?

Yes re torque after a cool down cycle . Actually with a calibrated instrument otherwise it kinda defeats the purpose . I would advise this to all the components of the engine and even accessories . Not done commonly but it’s great preventative maintenance I assure you .

How do you torque a stud?

To ensure proper studding, after riding use a torque wrench to tighten each nut to the following value:

  1. For Two-Ply studs (Gold Digger® Traction Master®, Mega-Bite®, Signature Series™, Trigger™), torque the nut to 15 ft. -lbs.
  2. For Single-Ply studs (Grand Master® and Grand Master Pro™), torque the nut to 30 ft. -lbs.

How do you torque exhaust manifold studs?

Use a small amount of anti-seize on the exposed threads that will be in contact with the nut. Install the exhaust manifold gasket and exhaust manifold. Install the washers and 12-point nuts and torque the nuts to 40 ft-lbs. Tighten in a sequence working from the inside to the outside as shown at right.

Do I need special bolts for exhaust manifold?

Are exhaust bolts special? Exhausts are not high stress areas so the bolts can be 8.8 or even softer. We used to use brass nuts on exhaust manifolds so the nut could be easily cut off in the unlikely event it seized. Grade 4.6, 4.8 or 5.8 should be all be fine.

Can I use bolts instead of studs Turbo?

DO NOT use bolts for the turbo connection; they will back out after a few heat cycles. The mechanical way the stud/nut works puts more tension on the stud to block (or turbo) side, then the nut side of the assembly allows for the thermal expansion without loosening.

Are exhaust studs reverse thread?

It’s not reverse thread, and if you just keep tightning the nut, you will snap the stud or strip threads. Best way was already mention. Jamming two nuts on a stud, and using the inner one to back out the whole stud. Studs can be installed the same way.
