Anti seize is a good idea on header bolts in general, in my experience. Even steel in steel they tend to freeze up over time (if they don’t fall out, as they did to you). The advice to use some type of lock is also a good one.
Do you put Loctite on header bolts?
From experience, even red loctite did not hold up. You need to use good ole torque, or some locking header bolts.
Do you put anything on exhaust manifold bolts?
If you are reusing exhaust manifold bolts (which we don’t recommend), apply a metal fortified anti-seize to your manifold bolts. If you’ve just removed the broken bolts and ready to complete the repair, chase the threads clean and use fresh OEM bolts for best results.
Should you use anti seize on header bolts with aluminum heads?
If you are running the threads into aluminum, anti-sieze is a wise choice. Use header bolt lock washers and the bolts should never back out. Header bolt lock washers are slightly different compared to standard lock washers. I like the allen head bolts as well for getting in tight places.
Why do exhaust manifolds use studs instead of bolts?
Studs provide the ability to obtain much more accurate torque values because the studs don’t twist during tightening as do bolts. Because the studs remain stationary during nut tightening, the studs stretch in one axis alone, providing much more even and accurate clamping forces.
How do you keep exhaust manifold bolts from rusting?
The excessive heat they endure tends to prevent any product from doing any quality job of preventing rust. That being said, some people suggest spraying a penetration oil, like WD40 or PB Blaster once a month on header bolts/studs to reduce rust build up, and prevent seizure.
Should you use lock washers on header bolts?
They will work. But you need to be diligent about retorquing them a couple of times. Have a few extra around in case you lose one. Split lock washers only work when the bolt gets loose; they don’t work to keep the bolt tight.
When should you not use anti seize?
Do not use anti-seize as a lubricant such as on caliper slide pins or on threads for a bushing press or any mechanical assembly that requires a lubricant. Do not use anti-seize on exposed threads because the compound can attract contaminants that may contribute to thread damage when the fastener is removed.
Is anti seize high temp?
Protects metal parts from seizing and galling at temperatures up to 2400°F (1316°C).
What are header bolts used for?
They are designed to increase engine low and mid-range horsepower and engine torque verse stock exhaust manifolds. Regular header bolts have a tendency to loosen-up do to engine thermo-cycling (heating up and cooling down) and engine vibration. They need to be re-torqued several times.
